FROM THE AUTHOR

My memories of Cyprus are of the child I used to be and the years of my youth as I experienced it during the time I lived in Cyprus before leaving in 1963. Written primarily for my children and grandchildren, but also the new generations of Cypriots and foreign readers as well, who may not be as familiar with Cyprus history. While I was chronicling my childhood memories of Cyprus I often asked myself "Who would care?" But after reading Marcel Pagnol's La Gloire de Mon Pere and Le Chateau de Ma Mere, I was encouraged. His Souvenirs d'Enfance reassured me that my bichronicle of Cyprus and my life would be of interest to readers as much as his was. Surprisingly, we had similar boyhoods though we lived in different countries and times. Young Marcel's memories were of Provence in France, mine of different places in Cyprus, especially Pitsilia. As young boys, we both enjoyed exploring the fragrant hills and mountains around us. We must have had a similar temperment, for we felt the same about nature able being outdoors. And as our favorites adventures show, we each loved listening to the cicadas sing.

REVIEWS

"Remembrances of the Heart: Chasing Dreams From Cyprus to America is more than a story of migration and exploration but poignantly redefines the 'American Dream'. Nicodemou provides a transformative narrative that is filled with stories of national history, determination and personal fortitude. This is a must-read book where we are reminded of the fundamentals on what a life with purpose looks like."

Zinga A. Fraser, Ph.D., author and Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and  Women's and Gender Studies, Brooklyn College, CUNY

"Very interesting and very useful for locals and foreigners who are in interested in the good, old times we lived in our childhood and years of our youth."

Dr. Andrea Sophocleous, Author and former Director of Press and Information Office, Cyprus

"Nicodemou writes with such passion and clarity that the reader is viscerally transported into his inspiring life."

Jeri Moses Buntline, Editor

"Delightful and necessary descriptions of the transitional move from a traditional mode of life in rural village-based culture, to an urban modern existence, written by a painter who happens to be a good writer. A period piece set in traumatic yet beautiful years."

Ruth Keshishian, Mouflon Bookshop, Nicosia, Cyprus
